Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and fingers caused by compression of the median nerve.
Overview
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral nerve entrapment of the upper extremity. It occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist. Symptoms include pain, numbness, tingling, or altered sensation in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. Many individuals notice nocturnal symptoms and temporary relief by shaking or repositioning the hand. CTS can significantly interfere with work tasks, daily activities, and quality of life. Conservative chiropractic care is effective for mild to moderate cases, and early management reduces the risk of long-term nerve impairment.
Common Causes
- Repetitive hand or wrist use (typing, assembly work)
- Sustained or awkward wrist positions
- Forceful gripping or vibrating tools
- Diabetes, thyroid disease, or inflammatory arthritis
- Pregnancy (fluid retention)
- Prior wrist injury or surgery
- Age and body habitus
Symptoms
- Pain, numbness, or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
- Nocturnal hand symptoms waking you from sleep
- Clumsiness or reduced grip strength
- Symptoms worsened by sustained wrist flexion or extension
- Relief with shaking or repositioning the hand
- Weakness with fine motor tasks
